The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Jess E. Evans (ASN: 0-365336), United States Army, for gallantry in action while a member of the United States Military Advisory Group to the Republic of Korea, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Towendong, Korea. On 4 August 1950, after withdrawing across the Naktong River, the 6th Republic of Korea Division was thinly deployed astride the Yungidong-Towendong Road. An enemy regiment had succeeded in securing Hill 236, a dominating terrain feature which afforded the hostile forces a clear field of fire and observation on the main supply route of the 6th Division. Realizing that the disruption of the supply route would seriously hamper operations of the Division, Major Evans, Senior United States Advisor to the Division, organized a company to launch an attack against the enemy and drive them from their positions. Nearing the objective, the company encountered intense artillery, mortar and automatic weapons fire and was pinned down. Disregarding the heavy volume of enemy fire, Major Evans moved across an exposed, fire-swept area to the machine gun squads and deployed them in positions from which crossfire could be directed on the enemy, then returned to the front of the company and personally led the attack. Inspired by his courage and intrepidity, the company moved aggressively forward and gained Hill 236, completely dispersing the enemy after engaging them in hand-to-hand combat. The gallantry displayed by Major Evans reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
