The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Harold L. Evans (ASN: RA-20619886), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 27 July 1950, near Yongdong, Korea, Sergeant Evans’ company was being harassed by intense sniper fire which was interfering with preparation of defensive positions. The numerically superior enemy threatened penetration of the lines. Gaining a vantage point from theirwhich he had a clear view of he terrain but where he was a conspicuous target for hostile action, Sergeant Evans calmly sought out the source of hostile fire. After 25 minutes of reconnaissance, he was able to direct effective machine gun fire on the snipers. Although killed during he ensuing action, he had contributed vitally to the defense of the hill. Sergeant Evans’ selfless and gallant devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
