Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 452 (November 28, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frederick H. Evans (ASN: 0-1913009), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date his unit, mounted on tanks, was pressing forward in an assault, through rugged mountainous terrain, against a stubbornly resisting enemy in an effort to dislodge the hostile forces from Hill 266, “Old Baldy”. As they neared the objective, word was received that the 2nd Platoon, acting as the advance guard, was in a vicious fire fight. Upon hearing of this, Lieutenant Evans ordered his men to dismount, and while still under heavy mortar and artillery fire, placed them in defensive positions to repel the expected enemy attack. When the enemy attack was launched against them, Lieutenant Evans received wounds that were of such serious nature that he could no longer stand and he was placed on the back deck of the leading tank where he continued giving directions to his men. The tank then was struck by a direct hit and he was blown 40 feet through the air and again gravely injured. Once again, though suffering intense pain and still under heavy mortar fire, Lieutenant Evans, with complete disregard for personal safety, refused evacuation and continued to shout encouragement and directions to his men until all the wounded had been evacuated. Through his courageous actions and outstanding leadership, all the wounded were safely evacuated and casualties were kept to a minimum. Lieutenant Evans’ courageous and loyal devotion to duty reflect the highest honor upon himself and are in keeping with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
