The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Raymond Evangelista (ASN: US-50004126), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 21 May and during the early morning hours of 22 May 1953, a raiding party of Company B had the mission of engaging and destroying the enemy in the vicinity of Pung-Myon, Korea. As the friendly elements were advancing toward the enemy, they were attacked by a numerically superior hostile force. During the assault, Sergeant Evangelista, an assistant platoon sergeant, kept firing his weapon with accuracy until his supply of ammunition was expended. Leaving the safety of his position, he acquired more ammunition and, while distributing it to the members of his platoon he observed that the clothing of one of his squad leaders was burning. Sergeant Evangelista unhesitatingly ran to the man and extinguished the burning clothing with his bare hands. While doing this, a member of the hostile force crept to their position. Sergeant Evangelista, warned of the presence of the enemy by a comrade, mortally wounded the hostile soldier. After administering first aid to the squad leader and evacuating him to a covered position, he returned and continued to engage the enemy. Sergeant Evangelista’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
