The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John H. Euell, Jr. (ASN: 0-382793), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 and 10 March 1951, in the vicinity of Chajak, Korea. On 9 March 1951 Lieutenant Euell was leading a rifle platoon given the mission to Capture Hill 527 from a strong enemy force. As the platoon approached its objective, the enemy immediately opened fire with automatic weapons and small arms. Realizing he would be unable to continue his assault from that position, he chose an alternate route of attack. Placing himself at the head of his platoon he led an assault which drove the hostile troops from the objective. As night fell, he was ordered to withdraw and establish a defensive perimeter. On the following morning it was once again necessary to attack Hill 527 as the enemy had reoccupied it during the night. Realizing there were no flanking routes, he called for artillery fire which silenced all opposition, with the exception of one machine gun. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Euell exposed himself to intense enemy fire and charged the hostile emplacement, routing the crew and capturing the weapon. Lieutenant Euell’s gallantry and outstanding leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
