The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Richard M. Ettinger (ASN: RA-13279137), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. The company with which Sergeant Ettinger was serving on 28 November 1950 was subjected to a determined attack by a strong hostile force in the vicinity of Ipsok, Korea. As the enemy advanced to within a few yards of friendly positions, Sergeant Ettinger and another soldier stood up and, holding a machine gun waist high, delivered deadly fire into the hostile ranks. So effective was their fire that the hostile attack was halted, enabling friendly forces to withdraw to more tenable positions. Sergeant Ettinger’s gallant actions and unflagging devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
