The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class George John Escobar (ASN: US-56142862), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 September 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, during an attack on an enemy-held hill Private Escobar’s platoon was suddenly subjected to intense hostile automatic weapons and small arms fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private Escobar, completely disregarding his own safety, advanced over the hazardous terrain toward an enemy bunker. Despite the intense hostile fire directed at him, he employed a devastating volume of fire into the emplacement destroying the hostile machine gun and inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. In an attempt to assault a second enemy emplacement he was fatally wounded by enemy fire before reaching it. His courageous action and self-sacrificing devotion to duty were an inspiration to his comrades and enabled them to secure their objective successfully. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Escobar reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
