The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) George H. Ensley (ASN: 0-61666), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 72d Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 16 to 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chaun-ni and Mumbong-ni, Korea. Lieutenant Ensley, with his platoon of tanks, was in a blocking position through which Republic of Korea forces withdrew. The enemy mounted a regimental attack upon this position and for two days and nights his platoon was under constant heavy attack. The enemy, attacking in a column of battalions, was cut to pieces by the withering and deadly fire of Lieutenant Ensley’s platoon. Throughout this period Lieutenant Ensley, with complete disregard for his personal safety, would dismount from the protective armor of his tank to encourage his men and help the Infantry in organizing their positions and providing ammunition for their machine guns. He moved from position to position, encouraging his men, directing their fire, unmindful of the heavy enemy fire from both small arms and mortars, until ordered to withdraw. Upon withdrawing, his tank hit a mine, but he manned the .50 caliber machine gun in order to cover the evacuation of his crew and in moving to another tank he was wounded. However, he continued to move on, gathering Infantry stragglers and leading them to safety. His gallantry and complete disregard for his own personal safety reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
