The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Sergeant First Class] Robert B. Emro (ASN: RA-11177922), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 April 1951, near Taejon-ni, Korea, when the Second Platoon was subjected to a fanatical attack by a numerically superior enemy force and forced to withdraw to more tenable positions, Sergeant Emro courageously covered the withdrawal with rifle and grenade fire. Upon rejoining the platoon and learning that four friendly infantrymen were unaccounted for, Sergeant Emro unhesitatingly moved forward to search for the missing men. While advancing through a series of trenches which interlaced the hill position, he encountered a group of enemy soldiers; and, although knocked to the ground by an exploding grenade, Sergeant Emro rose to his feet and single-handedly engaged the hostile troops in hand-to-hand combat. After clubbing two enemy soldiers to death and killing four more with rifle fire, he was forced to retire to the unit’s defensive positions. The outstanding gallantry, aggressiveness, and resoluteness displayed by Sergeant Emro reflects great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
