The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Quartermaster Corps) Walter T. Emmes, Jr. (ASN: 0-1587946), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 4050th Quartermaster Truck Company, in Germany. On the night of 11 April 1945, in Alsfeld, Germany, a cargo truck loaded with high explosive ammunition caught fire, showering shrapnel and burning fragments over the nearby area. Captain Emmes, with utter disregard for his own safety, approached the blazing truck and in the face of terrific explosions, fought the blaze with available fire fighting equipment in an effort to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings. Captain Emmes’ heroic actions and unswerving devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
