The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Evert L. Emery (ASN: RA-25876635), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 July 1951, Company L was assigned the mission of securing a ridge north of Hill 717, near Sobang-san, Korea. Corporal Emery, leading one of the assault squads, maneuvered his men through an intense hostile fusillade to a position near the crest of the hill where they were additionally subjected to a grenade barrage from an enemy bunker to the front, as well as hostile machine gun fire from both flanks. Although painfully wounded, Corporal Emery urged his squad forward, and upon reaching the crest, he stood alone, firing his rifle and hurling grenades at the hostile bunker. When his grenade supply was depleted, he picked up the grenades thrown at him by the foe and cast them back. This daring action resulted in the destruction of the bunker and its occupants, but not before he was wounded himself twice more. Nevertheless, he remained at his position, and the squad, inspired by his dauntless example, sustained the firefight until receiving a direct order to withdraw. Corporal Emery’s audacious leadership and selfless gallantry reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
