The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Paul P. Ellison, Jr. (ASN: 0-1335910), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On the morning of 12 July 1952, Company G was assigned the mission of staging a mass company raid upon enemy occupied territory near Ojang-dong, Korea, with the purpose of capturing prisoners and destroying enemy positions. Shortly after the leading assault elements had proceeded to accomplish their mission, an enemy land mine was accidentally detonated and immediately the men became excited and disorganized. Captain Ellison, realizing that the majority of the men were replacements who had never witnessed previous combat, and with utter and complete disregard for his own personal safety, raced across the open mine field to investigate and quell the confusion. Upon finding that there had been no casualties, he gave his men words of encouragement and reorganized the assault platoons. Shortly after proceeding in its mission again, the company was subjected to an intense enemy mortar barrage, which again aroused confusion and panic among the men. Unhesitatingly, Captain Ellison exposed himself to the lethal fire as he raced among his men shouting words of encouragement and helping them to reorganize. Then placing himself at the head of the assault group, he lead them on toward their objective, successfully directing the placement of satchel charges and enabling the friendly force to destroy five enemy bunkers and kill countless numbers of the foe. Captain Ellison’s fearless leadership and gallantry under enemy fire reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
