Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 154 (June 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William R. Ellis (ASN: 0-62814), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of Heavy Mortar Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 and 27 November 1950, in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. The enemy was exerting a terrific pressure upon front line defenses and Lieutenant Ellis moved the company forward so it could give uninterrupted fire support to the front line troops. About 2400 hours on 26 November 1950, the enemy penetrated the front line between two battalion sectors and was attempting to cross a river 400 yards from the mortar emplacements. Lieutenant Ellis personally checked his outposts, exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, assisted in bringing up replacements and carried ammunition to the machine guns. His inspiring courage enabled his men to maintain their positions and drive off the enemy. The disregard for personal safety and superior leadership displayed by Lieutenant Ellis reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
