The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Charles R. Ellis, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 300th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, X Corps, in action against the enemy in Korea on 28 May 1951. Private Ellis was fighting with the TENTH Corps on the mountainous central front near Inje, North Korea, when the enemy attacked the task force spearheaded from entrenchments high above the road. Although the numerically stronger enemy was raking the convoy with small arms, mortars and machine gun fire, Private Ellis manned the .50 caliber machine gun mounted on the vehicle on which he was riding and directed a withering fire on the enemy positions. He was mortally wounded at his machinegun but continued firing until he dropped, exhausted. His heroic stand permitted many of his comrades to take cover and enabled vehicles in the column to press on to more secure positions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
