The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Calvin W. Ellis (ASN: 0-63005), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Mortar Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 14 February 1951, near Tan-ri, Korea, Lieutenant Ellis’ company was moving along a road in a motor convoy when it ran into the flank of an enemy column crossing the road. Running to the head of the convoy, he noticed that the enemy was maneuvering over a ledge which would place the company in grave danger if the enemy could obtain positions in that area. Lieutenant Ellis, cognizant of that threat, quickly assembled men from the vehicles and personally led the force in charging the hill. Upon gaining the ridgeline, he reorganized his force and cleared the enemy from the danger area. After outposting the taken area, Lieutenant Ellis moved to a point where he could observe the enemy and from his site of observation he directed devastatingly accurate mortar fire on the hostile forces, causing many casualties. Lieutenant Ellis’ gallantry and inspiring leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
