The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer (Junior Grade) James C. Elliott, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 61st Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 November 1950 near Pakchon, Korea. When the battalion came under attack by an estimated 2500 Communist Chinese Infantry, and the men were running extremely short of small arms ammunition, Warrant Officer Elliott volunteered to attempt to replenish the supply. He crossed an area which was being fired upon by friendly and enemy alike, mounted a one-quarter-ton vehicle, and drove to an engineer unit some distance away. Warrant Officer Elliott, after securing ammunition and driving back to the battalion area, discovered he could approach no closer than 100 yards to the nearest battery position. Quickly dismounting from the vehicle, and in spite of the automatic weapons fire and accurate placement of mortar shells, he proceeded to hand carry the desperately needed ammunition to the beleaguered defenders. This action required many trips from the vehicle to the various batteries, but Warrant Officer Elliott carried out his mission so valiantly that those witnessing the act were determined to destroy the attackers. It was largely through his selfless devotion to duty that the battalion was able to withstand the onslaught of a fanatical enemy. His courage and inspiring leadership reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
