The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John A. Elledge (ASN: 0-1042282), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Battery, 503d Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 13 to 15 February 1951 in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. During that period he was attached, with an artillery battery, to an infantry regiment which was reinforced by a United Nations Battalion. This entire force had been surrounded by approximately four enemy divisions. Captain Elledge personally aided in replacing several .50 caliber machine guns which had been damaged by enemy fire and then carried wounded through the intense enemy fire to the battalion aid station. At 0500 hours on 15 February 1951, when overwhelming enemy forces had advanced to within 50 yards of the battery perimeter, he maintained a position exposed to the heavy enemy fire in order to fire the quadruple .50 caliber machine guns mounted on an anti-aircraft firing vehicle until all ammunition was exhausted. Later that day he again crossed a fire-swept area to assist in the removal of the prime movers and 155-mm. howitzers to a position deeper within the defensive perimeter. This heroic action resulted in saving many lives and was an inspiration to all his men. The gallantry displayed by Captain Elledge reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
