The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Adrian A. Eichhorn (ASN: 0-1020405), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, Division Artillery, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 17 December 1950, the 999th Armored Field Artillery Battalion (Motorized), of which Lieutenant Eichhorn was aerial observer, was furnishing general support to the 3d Infantry Division on the Hungnam beachhead. When the battalion requested aerial observation, Lieutenant Eichhorn volunteered and received special permission to fly this mission, even though all planes had been grounded because of adverse weather conditions. In order that he might properly identify the targets, he was forced to fly at an extremely low altitude which subjected him to small arms fire from the enemy. He fearlessly continued his mission and his information enabled strong artillery and naval gunfire to be brought to bear on the enemy, inflicting heavy casualties. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Eichhorn reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
