The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class [then Private] Robert D. Egley (ASN: US-55057660), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 August 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date a numerically superior enemy force was assaulting Company L’s position on a strategic hill. When the crew of a heavy machine gun had suffered such casualties as to render the weapon ineffective and was in danger of being overrun, Private Egley, a member of the 57-mm. recoilless rifle squad, volunteered to go to their aid. Braving the intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, grenade, and mortar fire, he advanced over the hazardous terrain to the machine gun emplacement. Although at times the enemy surrounded his position, Private Egley fearlessly defended his emplacement, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. His courageous action was highly responsible for the success of his unit in this engagement. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Egley on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
