The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) James Walter Edwards (ASN: 0-30274), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 13 to 15 February 1951, in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. During that period he was commanding an infantry battalion which was participating in the historic stand at Chipyong-ni. All through the night of 13 February 1951 he directed the defense of his sector from a command post which was under heavy artillery and mortar fire. His masterful direction of supporting fires and personal attention to each phase of the defense resulted in the complete rout of the attacking enemy. On the night of 14 February an attack by approximately 2,000 enemy troops forced a limited withdrawal of one of Colonel Edwards’ companies. On the morning of 15 February, he personally led a counterattack which lasted all day, much of the time at bayonet and hand grenade range. Near the end of this action, a relief column of tanks appeared, and the pressure on the enemy became so great that they broke and fled in all directions. The relentless and prolonged assault which had been personally led for many hours by Colonel Edwards contributed greatly to this rout of the enemy force. His heroic and inspiring leadership on this occasion was instrumental to the fact that more than a thousand enemy troops were killed in this action. The gallant conduct of Colonel Edwards throughout this operation reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
