The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James R. Ebarb (ASN: RA-18351411), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 23 May 1951, in the vicinity of Habae-jae, Korea. An attack by Company G was held up by an enemy well-entrenched on a steep hill with outcroppings of rock affording excellent cover. Corporal Ebarb boldly moved out in the face of heavy machine gun and small arms fire to a point within 15 feet of the enemy. With deadly accuracy, he fired his automatic rifle into the enemy positions and inflicted heavy casualties. After being joined by his platoon sergeant the two men attempted to rush across an open area in an effort to flank the enemy. Caught in a cross-fire of machine guns which instantly killed the sergeant, Corporal Ebarb was forced to withdraw under a rain of hand grenades, one bouncing off his helmet before exploding. When he regained his former position, Corporal Ebarb again fired point-blank into the enemy until he ran out of ammunition. Then with the same complete disregard for his safety he once more rushed forward to hurl hand grenades into the enemy’s foxholes. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Ebarb reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
