The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Frederick W. Earle (ASN: RA-12000512), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Yongwon-ni, Korea, the defensive positions on Hill 412 occupied by Sergeant Earle’s company were attacked by a large enemy force. When the besieged unit was given the order to withdraw, several well-placed enemy machine guns tended to make the withdrawal a costly and hazardous maneuver. The action was further complicated by a strong enemy concentration which had worked its way to the base of the hill and was preparing for an assault. Realizing the urgency for decisive action, Sergeant Earle, voluntarily left his position and became a human target in order to draw the enemy fire away from the rest of the unit, that it might escape. He remained, daringly exposed to the enemy fire, until every one had left the hill, and only when the enemy began to overrun the area, did he leave and rejoin his unit. Sergeant Earle’s gallant and courageous act reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
