The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Joseph P. Dworshock (ASN: ER-33465455), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 2d Engineer Combat Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 August 1951 in the vicinity of Pia-ri, Korea. On this date Sergeant Dworshock was in charge of an emergency mine clearing detail which had the mission to clear mines from an existing road so friendly tanks could maneuver and fire on reverse slopes of enemy held Hills 40 and 773. The detail passed through friendly lines and was subjected to continuous harassing sniper fire and occasional rounds of enemy mortar and artillery fire. Realizing the importance of his mission, Sergeant Dworshock, with complete disregard for his personal safety, constantly exposed himself to the enemy while directing operations. In the course of this act, his alertness disclosed a group of enemy soldiers moving towards his detail. Sergeant Dworshock immediately deployed his men in such a manner that the enemy was caught by surprise and forced to withdraw, suffering heavy casualties. Inspired by Sergeant Dworshock’s bravery and outstanding leadership, the men continued their task with renewed effort. His example of individual heroism materially aided the division in the successful operation for Bloody Ridge.
