The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Fred E. Duty (ASN: RA-6286514), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 89th Medium Tank Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. ON 27 November 12950, Sergeant First Class Duty was in command of a tank supporting a rifle company occupying defensive positions in the vicinity of Ipsok, Korea. When a strong hostile force attacked the perimeter, he remained in position and directed devastating fire on the foe until they had closed in from three sides. During the withdrawal he stood erect in the turret to guide the driver; after the tank was immobilized, he manned a heavy machine gun mounted on the tank and inflicted severe casualties on the enemy. He continued to fire the weapon until his comrades had escaped from the burning tank and the infantry had displaced to a more tenable position. Sergeant First Class Duty’s courage, determination and selfless devotion to duty and to his comrades reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
