The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal William Andrew Duster (ASN: US-52036521), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 September 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date, Corporal Duster was with a unit which was in defensive positions being subjected to the fierce attacks of a numerically superior enemy force. In the ensuing fire fight, Corporal Duster, with utter disregard for his own safety, left his unit’s defense perimeter and took up a position directly in the path of the onrushing enemy. Alone and exposed to direct enemy observation and fire, he repelled the hostile force with devastating fire from his automatic weapon. His accurate and effective fire inflicted numerous casualties on the enemy. His courage and devotion to duty were an inspiration to all who witnessed his act and were instrumental to the success of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Duster on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
