Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 516 (December 20, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Franklin A. Durham (ASN: 20506504), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands. During a counterattack upon enemy positions superior fire from machine guns and rifles of the enemy pinned down the attacking elements. Corporal Durham, who had become separated from his own unit, noted the situation and immediately went forward on his own initiative to assist his comrades. In the subsequent skirmish his aggressive actions contributed inestimably in bringing sufficient fire to bear on the enemy and permitted an orderly withdrawal. While remaining in his position to cover the withdrawal, Corporal Durham was killed by hostile fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
