The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Thomas M. Dunphy (ASN: US-55063631), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandeau-san, Korea. On that date, Company L was counterattacked by a numerically superior enemy force. During this action, Private Dunphy noticed a wounded comrade lying in an exposed position in the path of the assaulting hostile force. Disregarding the intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire, he left his position of comparative safety and advanced to the side of the wounded man. Applying first aid, he immediately carried his comrade to the safety of his position. He then continued in the defense of his position and when his supply of rifle ammunition was exhausted he used grenades to keep the enemy from overrunning the perimeter. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Private Dunphy on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
