The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Floyd Ellsworth Dunn (ASN: 0-16261), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 182d Infantry Regiment, 182d Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against the enemy at Cebu, Philippine Islands, during the period from 26 March 1945 to 17 April 1945. Until enemy resistance cracked, Colonel Dunn was constantly in the front lines with his troops. Wherever actions was heaviest his figure was to be seen coolly appraising the tactical situation despite the enemy fire. His disregard for his own personal safety was an inspiration to his regiment and proved a major factor in the success of our operations against the enemy. The gallant leadership and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Dunn, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry), [then Lieutenant Colonel] Floyd Ellsworth Dunn, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 182d Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against the enemy on Bougainville, British Solomon Islands, from 21 to 27 March 1944. Upon taking command of the regiment, then engaged in close contact with the enemy, he immediately made a personal reconnaissance of the regimental lines, including the most forward positions, literally in the face of the enemy. He repeatedly exposed himself in visiting forward elements, personally inspecting and test-firing weapons under close observation of the enemy. His presence in the most forward areas, as well as the supervision he gave to all details of the tactics of his regiment, was an inspiration to the men, and greatly improved the positions and effectiveness of the units during their stubborn holding efforts and subsequent annihilation of the enemy on Hill 260. Colonel Dunn’s courageous leadership, tactical ability, and devotion to duty reflect great credit on himself and the United States Army. (This award supersedes the award of the Bronze Star Medal with “V” device to Colonel Dunn, for heroic achievement during the same period, as published in sec. I, General Orders 56, Headquarters, Americal Division, 13 April 1944.)
