The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Corps of Engineers) Carroll H. Dunn (ASN: 0-21427), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, on 25 July 1944, in France. While supervising the men of his battalion in the removal of enemy mines from the area of operations of friendly infantry troops, the infantry troops were subjected to a fierce counterattack by the enemy. Leaderless because of casualties inflicted by the enemy, the friendly infantry troops began to withdraw. Grasping the situation at once, Colonel Dunn moved forward in the face of intense enemy fire, rallied the retreating troops, reorganized them, and personally led them in the attack and regained the territory that had been previously overrun by the enemy. The personal bravery and outstanding leadership displayed by Colonel Dunn on this occasion reflect high credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
