The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Medical Service Corps) Paul P. Dudyk (ASN: 0-1996899), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Popsu-dong, Korea, during an enemy attack, Lieutenant Dudyk was in charge of a forward aid station, under vicious hostile fire. When an order to withdraw was received, he refused to leave until all the casualties had been successfully evacuated. When this difficult task had been completed, Lieutenant Dudyk ordered the personnel of the aid station to withdraw, only to find their escape route severed by enemy troops. Organizing the men into an attack formation, Lieutenant Dudyk led them in a fight to clear a path through the enemy line. At the beginning of the dangerous venture, a trip flare exploded and wounded the fearless officer, but continuing to rally his men, he guided them successfully to a rear assembly area. After the arrival, Lieutenant Dudyk learned that another friendly unit was heavily engaged and encountering difficulty in evacuating casualties. Refusing medical aid he immediately rode to the aid of the beleaguered troops and rendered the needed medical assistance. Lieutenant Dudyk’s gallant leadership and conspicuous devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the esteemed traditions of the military service.
