The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Armor), [then Captain] Robert L. Dudley (ASN: 0-33746), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 27 November 1950, near Ipsok, Korea, the command post of major Dudley’s battalion was attacked by a numerically superior hostile force. He assumed the responsibilities of the executive officer after the latter was wounded. Despite constant exposure to heavy machine gun and small arms fire, he moved among his men, coordinated their movement and fire and so encouraged them by his resolute matter that they forced the enemy into disorderly retreat. Quickly redeploying his men, he led them in a successful counterthrust, reopened a vital supply route and then skillfully supervised the evacuation of the wounded. Major Dudley’s intrepid leadership and selfless devotion to duty served as an inspiration to his men and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
