The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Roger L. Duce (ASN: 0-5340166), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Duce distinguished himself by valorous acts on 8 May 1968, while serving as Platoon Leader of the Third Platoon of Company B, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On that date Company B was on a combat sweep near the village of Bong Mieu (1) eight miles southwest of Tam Ky, when it came under automatic weapons and small arms fire from a platoon-sized North Vietnamese Army force. Under the extremely intense hostile fire, Lieutenant Duce directed his platoon against the fortified positions. At the same time, two other members of the third platoon attacked and knocked out the enemy machinegun. With the machine gun eliminated, Lieutenant Duce led an inspired attack against the remaining enemy positions. The attack resulted in the death of 14 insurgents, the capture of a .50 caliber machine gun, and two automatic weapons. First Lieutenant Duce’s unquestionable valor in close combat with a numerically superior hostile force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
