The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert H. DuBois (ASN: 0-961930), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Sanggonbae, Korea. On this date Lieutenant DuBois, platoon leader, was given the mission of leading his platoon to assist another unit in an attack on an enemy-held hill. Leading his men up the right side of the hill, his view of the summit was hindered by a dense growth of trees. As they neared the crest of the hill, they were exposed to a withering blaze of fire from enemy automatic and small arms weapons from well-entrenched bunkers made of stones. Advancing against the intense hostile fire, Lieutenant DuBois suffered wounds on both legs, but despite the extreme pain, he kept up with his men, controlling them in their advance. Only when the enemy fire became so heavy as to prevent any further movement, did he permit himself and his men to withdraw from their objective. However, their actions had diverted the enemy’s attention long enough for the other friendly unit, attacking from the left, to drive the hostile forces from their ridge and secure the objective. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Lieutenant DuBois reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
