The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert W. Doyle (ASN: RA-11153563), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. In the early morning hours of 15 August 1952, a platoon of Company I was assigned the mission of assaulting a well-fortified enemy-occupied hill in the vicinity of Chiro-dong, Korea. Upon nearing its objective, the assault platoon of which Sergeant Doyle was a member, was subjected to intense enemy small arms, grenade and automatic weapons fire. Shortly after engaging the foe in a fierce fire fight, hostile reinforcements began firing upon the friendly forces covering the assault platoon. Realizing that the men were becoming panicky when they were almost completely surrounded by the enemy, Sergeant Doyle fearlessly dashed about the fire-swept terrain shouting words of encouragement to the men, placing them in advantageous positions, and directing the combined fire of the assault and covering groups upon the foe. He directed the fire power of the two groups so effectively that the friendly forces were able to repulse the fanatical forces and quickly silence their weapons. When the order was given to withdraw, he voluntarily remained behind in an exposed position disregarding his personal safety as he provided the friendly forces with effective covering fire during their withdrawal. Only after he was assured that all the wounded were safely evacuated did he leave his exposed position. Sergeant Doyle’s conspicuous gallantry, inspirational leadership and selfless actions which prevented the assault group from being surrounded reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
