The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then Sergeant] Wayne M. Douglas (ASN: 80030105), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 132d Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action on 2 and 3 January 1943, on Guadalcanal. While attacking Hill 27, the 1st Platoon suffered severe losses, including the platoon leader. Captain Douglas, a squad leader at the time, took command immediately. It was necessary to move some of his men to more advantageous positions. During this movement, Captain Douglas covered the movement by throwing hand grenades and firing his rifle, exposing himself to severe enemy fire. During the night the enemy made seven counterattacks against the platoon, all unsuccessful. Captain Douglas’ disregard for personal safety was an inspiration to all his men and his leadership reflects great credit on the military service.
