The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Carl E. Douglas (ASN: RA-15277393), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 29th Regimental Combat Team 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 20 August 1950, while assaulting an enemy strongpoint in the vicinity of Haman, Korea, Private First Class Douglas’ platoon was effectively halted by intense machine gun fire. Crawling to an exposed position on the crest of the hill in order to obtain better observation, he neutralized the hostile machine gun and expertly directed the fire of his automatic rifle into the enemy position until he was mortally wounded. By his initiative, gallant devotion to duty and soldierly ability, Private First Class Douglas was instrumental in eliminating a great danger to his platoon and greatly assisted in the continuance of the attack to seize the platoon objective. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
