The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant William Henry Doughty (ASN: RA-21203644), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 1 July 1951, in the vicinity of Sobang-san, Korea, the First Platoon, advancing in the attack upon Hill 717, encountered and quickly overcame the hostile force offering resistance. While reorganizing and waiting for Sergeant Doughty’s platoon to break through and join them, they were subjected to a fanatical counterattack. Sergeant Doughty, a squad leader, immediately moved his squad on line with the First Platoon and personally placed his men in positions from which they could best return the enemy’s fire. Moving about among his men to direct and encourage them, he continually exposed himself to the lethal hostile fire until he was mortally wounded. His outstanding leadership and courage were instrumental in repulsing the enemy assault and were a vital contribution to his unit’s overall mission. Sergeant Doughty’s exemplary gallantry and complete devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
