The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Paul Doughty (ASN: RA-12356620), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 8 October 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On this date, while attacking vital hill positions, Company F encountered heavy enemy resistance. With his unit pinned down and the intensity of the hostile fire increasing, Sergeant Doughty, realizing the seriousness of the situation, continued forward. During the ensuing action he was painfully wounded by fragments from a bursting shell but, with complete disregard for his personal safety, continued on. Nearing an enemy bunker, which had the friendly troops pinned down, Sergeant Doughty assumed an exposed position and, with a well placed grenade, succeeded in neutralizing the emplacement. As a result of his courageous action, friendly units were able to continue the assault and rout the remaining hostile force. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Doughty on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
