The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Claude Holt Doughtie, Jr. (ASN: 0-62535), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951, Company F of the 15th Infantry was given the mission of attacking and securing Hill 400, near Chorwon, Korea. Lieutenant Doughtie, attached as a forward observer with the company, noted that all but one of F Company’s officers were wounded in the assault phase of the attack. Realizing the need for additional leadership, he left his comparatively safe position and led the center portion of the company in an assault up the ridge until the objective was secured. Completing this action, Lieutenant Doughtie returned to the rear of the company and led ammunition and re-supply units through enemy mortar and artillery fire to the top of the ridge. By disregarding his own safety and initiating effective leadership at a crucial phase in the assault, he was highly instrumental in the success of the mission. The gallantry and exemplary actions of Lieutenant Doughtie reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
