The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Arthur R. Dougherty (ASN: RA-13316240), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 16 September 1950, in the vicinity of Amdong, Korea. On that date Corporal Dougherty’s company was assigned the mission of securing a long, barren ridge. Corporal Dougherty was a member of the platoon which was leading the assault. As the unit advanced upon the objective, it suddenly came under heavy enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire from the well-entrenched enemy positions. One of the first to reach the crest of the hill, Corporal Dougherty, with utter disregard for his own safety, daringly charged through the intense fire and assaulted three enemy positions, thereby enabling the remainder of his platoon to advance to the crest of the hill with a minimum of casualties. When the hill had been secured, the platoon advanced to establish contact with a friendly unit but was again fired upon by the enemy. Once more Corporal Dougherty exposed himself to the fire, crawled forward and killed several enemy with hand grenades, thus enabling his comrades to advance. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Dougherty reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
