The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Joseph A. Doty (ASN: RA-13058420), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Popsu-dong, Korea, while occupying a defensive position on Hill 287, Sergeant Doty’s platoon was attacked by a large enemy force which compelled his squad to begin a withdrawal to more tenable positions. Seeing that two members of his squad were wounded and unable to withdraw, Sergeant Doty, heedless of his personal safety, gallantly advanced toward the attacking enemy, firing his rifle and momentarily causing the hostile troops to fall back, enabling him to hasten to the aid of the stricken soldiers. He then carried his comrades, one at a time, through the hail of enemy fire to safety. As the remainder of the platoon withdrew, Sergeant Doty, ignoring the commencing barrage of artillery fire, returned to the platoon area where he checked for possible wounded who had been left in the position. Sergeant Doty’s gallantry, courage and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
