The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Corporal Robert L. Dorr (ASN: RA-12415228), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 15 July and during the early morning hours of 16 July 1953, in the vicinity of Choe Gung-Dong, Korea, Company C had the mission of relieving a company positioned on a strategically valuable sector of the United Nations line. As the change-over was in progress, the enemy commenced an intense artillery and mortar barrage which was followed by a large scale attack. Corporal Dorr, a squad leader, led his men through the intense enemy barrage and effectively deployed them on the main line of resistance. In the ensuing action, the enemy disabled the crew of a friendly flanking machine gun. Realizing the danger of the situation, Corporal Dorr courageously moved to the flank, firing as he ran. Upon reaching the machine gun, he immediately manned the weapon and proceeded to fire rapidly and accurately at the foe, repelling their attempts to envelope the unit. When the enemy had advanced close to his position, he stood up, holding the machine gun, and continued to deliver fire, forcing the attackers to withdraw. He remained at his post throughout the night until assured that the foe had been driven off and then assisted in the evacuation of his wounded comrades. Corporal Dorr’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
