The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Earl L. Dorr (ASN: RA-20838566), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 2d Engineer Combat Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kujang-dong, Korea. On that date his company’s defensive positions were subjected to an overwhelming attack by an enemy force of estimated battalion strength. The squad commanded by Sergeant Dorr was given the mission of holding the left flank of the company’s perimeter and maintaining contact with an adjacent unit. Throughout the night his squad’s position was attacked by overwhelming enemy forces. Disregarding the intense hostile automatic weapons and small arms fire raking his squad’s position, he moved about encouraging and exhorting his men to stand fast. On several occasions he advanced forward of his lines to rake the enemy with automatic rifle fire. When he was notified that his company could no longer hold its untenable position, he placed himself to the rear and covered the withdrawal of his squad to the banks of the Chongchon River. While the company crossed the river he held his squad in place to provide covering fire and only when his unit had effected its withdrawal did he lead his men across the ice-filled river to the safety of a nearby village. Throughout the engagement his fearlessness and his gallantry served as an inspiration to his comrades and reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
