Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 273 (August 19, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Harold J. Dooley (ASN: 0-1330169), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 18 April 1952, near Chunggo jan, Korea, Captain Dooley, Commanding Officer of Company I, 3d Battalion, led a five man patrol deep into hostile territory to locate and destroy enemy mortars by directing artillery fire on the reverse slope positions. The mortars had been harassing and inflicting considerable casualties upon friendly forces. By skillful maneuvers and daring courage, he led his men past and behind strongly defended enemy outposts until they reached a point from which hostile fortifications could be observed. From this position he accurately relayed fire directions over phone lines the patrol laid as it advanced. Although subjected to intense sniper and small arms fire and risking possible death or capture, Captain Dooley determinedly remained in rear of enemy positions for two and one half hours, directing fire so effectively that two mortar positions, two anti-aircraft machine gun emplacements and four enemy bunkers were destroyed and heavy enemy casualties inflicted. After all profitable targets were exhausted, he skillfully led the patrol back through the enemy territory to friendly lines without sustaining a casualty. Captain Dooley’s outstanding gallantry and untiring devotion to duty by exposing himself behind enemy lines contributed materially to the security of friendly forces and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
