The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Anthony J. Donatelli (ASN: RA-31382817), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 72d Medium Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 September 1950 in the vicinity of Chi-dong, Korea. Sergeant Donatelli was a member of a tank crew protecting the left flank of a rifle company which was under heavy attack. Because of mechanical failure of his tank, he elected to dismount and fight with the infantry. He advanced to the most forward infantry outpost, from which position he poured deadly bursts of sub-machine gun fire into the attacking enemy, inflicting heavy losses upon them. Because of the numerical superiority of the enemy he was forced to withdraw and while doing so he was seriously wounded by grenade fragments. In spite of his intense pain, he fearlessly faced the oncoming enemy, firing upon them until he was mortally wounded by hostile machine gun fire. His heroic action slowed the enemy advance and enabled the infantry elements to withdraw to more tenable positions without more serious casualties. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Donatelli reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
