The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] George S. Doescher (ASN: 0-1339522), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, [then Company G], 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 March 1951 in the vicinity of Yundong-ni, Korea. On this date Lieutenant Doescher was leading a platoon in an offensive maneuver against the flank of a numerically superior enemy force. During the ensuing action, the unit’s advance was halted by concentrated fire from well-fortified enemy positions. Realizing the seriousness of this situation, Lieutenant Doescher voluntarily exposed himself to intense fire and assaulted hostile positions, inflicting numerous enemy casualties. His men were so inspired by this act of bravery that they resumed the attack and successfully overran the enemy emplacement. Lieutenant Doescher’s aggressive leadership and dauntless courage were directly responsible for the enemy force being completely routed with a minimum of friendly casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Doescher on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
