The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Melvin L. Dixon (ASN: RA-14041706), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 January 1951, near Sumyong-Hyon, Korea, while attacking firmly entrenched enemy positions on a ridge leading to Hill 425, the unit objective, Company E was subjected to intense enemy fire which completely disorganized the assaulting elements. Despite the intensity of the hostile fire, Sergeant Dixon hastily reorganized his squad and led it in a renewed assault on the enemy defenses. While moving across the exposed terrain, Sergeant Dixon was severely wounded by enemy automatic weapons fire. Although in pain and unable to move, he courageously continued to direct the assault until mortally wounded by fragments from an exploding mortar shell. Inspired by Sergeant Dixon’s exemplary bravery, the unit continued the ferocity of its attack and successfully secured the objective. The outstanding gallantry displayed by Sergeant Dixon reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
