The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Earl H. Dixon (ASN: RA-34609583), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Popsu-dong, Korea, Sergeant Dixon’s platoon, occupying defensive positions near Hill 287, was attacked by a large enemy force, which threatened to overrun the area. Sergeant Dixon, Platoon Sergeant, realizing the grave danger to his platoon and the possibility of the enemy’s blocking the route of withdrawal of the battalion, voluntarily and with disregard for his personal safety, braved the murderous enemy fire and crawled from position to position, encouraging his men and assuring them that they could beat off the enemy assault. Noticing that the pressure of the battle was causing the left flank of the platoon position to give way, he again exposed himself to the devastating fire and ran to the area where he joined in holding back the enemy. The men at this position, inspired by their platoon sergeant’s presence, drove off the onrushing enemy preventing him from overrunning the platoon position, and holding open the battalion’s route of withdrawal. Sergeant Dixon’s gallantry and exemplary devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
