The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class David Dixon (ASN: US-53082430), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 March 1953 in the vicinity of Kowang-Ni, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Dixon was serving as a squad leader in a platoon sized raid on Hill 220. As the friendly group reached the edge of the enemy trenches, it was met by intense enemy small arms fire. Despite the personal dangers involved, Sergeant Dixon traversed the fire swept terrain, offering instructions, advice and encouragement to his men, throughout the entire action. After the friendly forces had successfully completed their mission and were returning to friendly lines, it was discovered that one squad member was missing. Sergeant Dixon, with complete disregard for personal safety, voluntarily returned to the fire swept area in an effort to locate the missing man. Constantly in danger of small arms fire and harassed by exploding mortar rounds, he continued his search until the injured man was found. After administering first aid to his comrade, he then carried him across the treacherous terrain to the safety of friendly positions. His superior leadership contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and his gallant devotion to his comrades undoubtedly saved a man’s life. Sergeant Dixon’s gallantry in action reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
