The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Ordnance Corps), [then Captain] Werner Dinteman (ASN: 0-361664), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 703d Ordnance Maintenance Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 9 December 1950, during the evacuation of Wonsan airfield, it became necessary to destroy a large quantity of rockets which could not be removed due to enemy pressure. Major Dinteman, knowing that the rockets could not be destroyed until all shipping was at least two miles off shore because of rocket danger radius, voluntarily remained ashore after all combat troops had been evacuated. Heedless of his personal safety, he led the small demolition team back to the airfield into an area known to contain the enemy and successfully accomplished the mission. The gallantry and courage displayed by Major Dinteman in denying the use of valuable material to the enemy reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
